Ayala Sender of Ayala Moriel Perfumes…The Inspired & Inspiring Instructor by Justine Crane

Ayala Sender of Ayala Moriel Perfumes is perhaps one of the most prolific and successful Natural Botanical Perfumers in the field today and judging by the glowing testimonials of her students, Ayala exceeds as an above par teacher of Natural Botanical Perfume as well.

My first experience with Ayala’s perfumes was via a sample of her submission to the blog Memory & Desire during the Perfume in a Poem: In a Station of the Metro (Ezra Pound) perfume event in March 2008. I remember being completely stunned by how she’d perfectly captured the “subtle and urban, floral but also dirty” feel with this perfume, how the scent embodied the raw, gritty essence of dampened dust and urbanity mingling with the finer points of nature: clean rain, fresh blossoms, and cool air.

Ayala shared with Perfume Pharmer some of her thoughts as a Natural Botanical Perfume instructor ~

“I try to teach perfumery the way I studied it, with no shortcuts, because the only way you will own the knowledge is by earning it.” Ayala Sender

Ayala ~ Sharing my knowledge in the art of perfumery is something I’m most passionate about. Having students who are eager to learn and master the art of perfumery gives me an opportunity to share my experience with the raw materials, the creative process as well as problem solving. Otherwise, the perfumer’s work is honestly quite solitary, tedious and not nearly as glamorous as it may seem from the outside… Especially rewarding it is to see my most persevering students graduating after years of training and launching their own lines. They will soon become colleagues with whom I would be able to see eye to eye and create a community that is led by sharing knowledge, and promote this rare art form with passion and integrity.

And lastly, teaching requires constant studying and forces me to learn new things and get out of my comfort zone. In a way, I learn with my student as we go, because whenever they come up with a question or technical difficulty that I’m not sure about, I need to do extra research on my own and learn new techniques and theories.  I think that makes me a better teacher, because I can relate to my students’ learning curve and frustrations better as a result.

Each teacher’s style of instruction is different; Ayala shares her thoughts on what sets her teaching technique apart from the other ~

A ~ Balancing between theory and practice is the key principle of how I teach. Another thing that is important to me, and as far as I know unique to my program, is sharing my insights into the creative process of perfumery, and giving guidance in that area. Approaches to composition is something that is hardly addressed in perfumery schools, and most students are left to their own devices to figure this out on their own.

With that being said, and especially with my self-training background, my expectations from my students for independent thinking and being able to do research and studying on their own are rather high. Studying perfumery is not easy, and it’s even more difficult (and far more expensive as well!) to study it on your own, which is how I can personally attest to. I try to teach perfumery the way I studied it, with no shortcuts, because the only way you will own the knowledge is by earning it. However, when it comes to resources, supplies and reading material – I built my program to help my students save themselves some costly expenses (such as books and raw materials) and focus only on what is absolutely necessary for their studies at each phase.

Here are a few testimonials from some of Ayala’s students, who, by the way, are launching their perfumeries this year!

Monique Trottier, Botany of Delight (http://www.somisguided.com/perfume)

“Ayala is an incredibly gifted natural perfumer and her autodidactic approach to perfumery makes her study guide and workbook accessible to those approaching perfumery with the same quizzical and self-guided approach. In addition, her classroom work and assignments move students quickly beyond the basics and into advanced study, making the course appealing to multiple levels of students, including those well-versed in complementary practices such as aromatherapy. My years of study with Ayala have provided me with a solid foundation of skills in recording and methodology, blending practices and creative concept development. She is inspirational and a constant source of knowledge and support”.

Anita Kalnay, Flying Colors Art + Aromatherapy (http://www.genieinabottle.ca)

“As I sit here with my scent strips sniffing my latest inspired creation – I realized how much I have learned from Ayala.  With respect to perfuming, much of it is establishing olfactory vocabulary.  The skill comes with being able to correct your mistakes, re-formulate for different applications and stay on track with your design theme.  Ayala’s course offers solid hands on grounding in the skills of a natural perfumer – whether as a hobbyist or professional. …And I had been in the Aromatherapy profession for 15 years prior to studying with her.  She kindly refers to me as an ‘Aromatherapist in Rehab’.”

Lucy Miller, Lucy Miller Pure (http://lucymillerpure.com)

“Perfumery is art and science fused with both skill and a natural given talent. Studying with Ayala has been much like stepping back into time – A time where traditional perfumery was rich with pure scent and skillful apprenticeships.  As a student, I was challenged and because of the challenge I have gained tremendous education and training. I love Ayala’s passion, dedication and demand for academic rigor. Mostly I bow to Ayala with deep gratitude, admiration and reverence for her as a Perfumer and teacher”.

What a lovely testament to Ayala teaching. I especially like her focus on sharing her deeply earned insights into the process of creating perfume and her movement from theory to practices. We have shared some students and I have heard wonderful things about Ayala’s classes.

Thank you, ladies, for all your kind words – in the article and in the comments!
Justine, thank you very much for interviewing me and publishing this article. I’m so thrilled that you feel that way about my perfumes!

Mandy, I heard many wonderful things about your teachings from my own students as well! I’ve always been fascinated by your elegant style of composition as well as your writing. Your passion and knowledge of the raw materials is inspiring!

I’m blessed to have had such dedicated students in the past 3 years since my program began. Their talent and commitment to the art of natural perfumery is something I hope more people will be able to experience and enjoy once they are ready to launch and share what they’ve created.
