Part I

We were young then,

We wore patchouli.

We sold flowers

Outside  the deli.

We wore musk oil,

We wore toe rings.

We wore bells on

Our little blouse strings.

And we were high!

As high as kites!

And protesting the war was our right.

And we would all  get stoned together,

In free love we believed together,

Burning our bras and our flag was alright.

<guitar strum and fade>

Part II

A RIDDLE:

The ones that were in it remember me.

The ones that came later heard about me.

The ones that came after that never heard of me.

WHAT AM I?

ANSWER:  Patchouli

It used to surprise me when I’d mention patchouli and get a blank look – or get asked, “What’s that”?  Over time I’ve come to realize that patchouli has become a forgotten treasure .   But even though the love children have grown up, and the spirit of the 60’s culture has long faded, patchouli remains a thing of glory.
